Empowering 6th Graders: Using Pixton to Tackle Cyberbullying Through Comics

Sandwich Elementary PTA

The culminating project for 6th grade technology in the Fall was a Cyberbullying Comic using the online tool: Pixton.

The focus of the project was based on safe responses to cyberbullying (including telling a trusted adult at home or school, blocking and reporting cyberbullying).

After a teacher-led lesson and whole class discussion, students created a comic strip using Pixton where one character is the target of cyberbullying and the other takes the role of Ally or Upstander. The characters work together to safely respond to cyberbullying. See examples below by Amelia and Max.

Mrs. Ganju requested the funds to purchase Pixton from the PTA for this project because Pixon allows students to create their own avatar and use classmates' avatars in the comic.

This personalized approach turns the comic project into a "role play" experience and supports the standard "demonstrates ability to communicate and collaborate using technology."

While a base Pixton account is free, in order for every 6th grade student to have the experience, a paid version was requested and granted.
